1.) In order to answer this question, I decided to refresh myself and investigate the major characteristics of both utopian and dystopian societies. Based on the characteristics I don’t think the pastoral past completely fits into either of these two categories. Although having to pick one I think it fits more into the utopian side. While the farmer life isn’t perfect, most of these people work in unison with each other and the government. They grow the food, whether it be animals or crops and it gets distributed to citizens around the country. In return the farmers are paid well and are able to keep portions of their yield.
2.) Typically, I have no problem reading either of the two genres. However, I feel that I personally prefer the sci- fi genre due to the futuristic aspect of it. Typically, it tends to have some form of new and interesting technology or some other not earthly aspect. As for the critique, I don’t really think much of it. I feel that both genres have a couple of non-historical aspects in them. Fantasy may in fact have more but there’s nothing wrong with that in my eyes.
