Insecure/Self-Conscious-You can tell she is afraid of what people think about her body on page 145 when after she realizes what Wahram had saw and jerks away “she was inspecting his face” after their conversation about it.
Curious- She’s always looking for something, like when talking to Mqaret about Alex and they say “Still what? We break, Swan. Sooner or later, at some point we break.”
“I just wondered why.” or when talking to Wang and Wahram when she says “Tell me what’s going on,” she demanded. “You two were working with Alex on something.” it’s killing her not to know what her grandmother was working on, even though it didn’t pertain to her and she obviously isn’t meant to know right now.
Adventurous- In the prologue when they are talking about her it even says that “So there is reason to worry about Swan Er Hong, a person more inclined than most to try things just to see.”
Creative- As we learn on page 40, Swan was a designer. I think it’s safe to say that it’s known that designers must be creative.
Determined-She doesn’t give up even when she's hurt, not even when they were going through the tunnels and she had passed out then started feeling even worse as time went on. Despite her struggles she went on. “After the rests she struggled up and continued walking, and would brook no argument against it.”
Compassionate-The perfect example of this to me comes on page 144 the first time that Swan passes out in the tunnels. He took the time to clean up her butt before putting on her spacesuit because he wanted her to still be comfortable when she came back to consciousness. Even in their conversation after that when he felt so uneasy at the thought of the bug he didn’t express this to Swan, possibly because he could read Swans own emotions about it.
Hopeful- Throughout their entire tunnel journey Wahram is constantly reciting hopeful quotes that he has memorized.
Humble- On pages 136 and 137 when Swan was wanting him to whistle more songs he named 6 different songs he could “maybe” whistle then whisteled them perfectly. The songs were reasonably long. That’s an obvious talent but when pointed out how impressive it is he didn’t brag about it or anything.
Loyal- This also comes from page 144 that same situation shows loyalty as he didn’t have to stay by her side. He chose to.
Cautious- On page 158 when Swan ran onto the platform he tried to stop her and didn’t want to go out because he knew it’d be safer in the elevator.
How does Robinson evaluate these characters' personalities. Does he use words that portray a good/bad emotion, feeling, or character with their personalities. If not do the characters do this? (Use text examples)
When Swan and Wahram first meet Robinson gives us Swan’s impression of Wahram and doesn’t make it a good one at all. But as the story goes on the characters actions show them to be good people and show them to be forming a very good relationship with each other.
