1. This present situation with the COVID virus is unlike anything we have had to go through. Its spreading worldwide and is very contagious and deadly to those with health issues. It has spread very rapidly and now many countries around the world have ordered their people to stay home and slow the spread of the virus. With all these problems the most important thing from this situation is that this country is completely unprepared and lacks the proper leadership the handle this situation. This virus has exposed flaws with the way we operate at a micro and macro level and we now must make changes late as a response to it. The average person in this country will struggle for weeks to come as they cannot work while the virus continues to spread, they may not have enough money to make it through weeks of quarantine or even not have healthcare. It is hard to be positive during a time like this, but I do feel optimistic about the future. Eventually we will make it through this virus and things will more or less go back to normal, but I have hope that after this whole situation is done that we will make an effort to right the wrongs that the virus has exposed and even be more prepared for anything that may come in the future, so in that way this situation has some utopian possibilities .I feel the best way to tell a story about this whole situation would be in a third person past tense point of view so that you could view how we have or have not learned from how we handled things. I feel that third person would work better as I think to tell a story like this would be better if told from multiple perspectives instead of just from one character.
2. One of my favorite dystopian books is “Roadside Picnic” by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. It is a 1972 science fiction novel about a world after a short visit from aliens and how people are handling it. The visitation areas of the aliens is split into 6 different “zones” all full of goods and deadly things left behind by the aliens, and the story follows a character who frequently visits those zones both legally and illegally. It is a dark and melancholy novel and it is very different to other science fiction novels that I have read. The characters are believable and feel like the type of people that would exist in this type of dystopia. The way science fiction is used in this novel is also very interesting as the story takes place after the visit of alien life and it’s all about the lives of people living in a town near one of these zones, meaning that there is no contact with aliens only with the deadly junk they left behind. This novel is also the basis for the 1979 film “Stalker”.
