The world today with the COVID-19 going around for me is off putting. I have been working in a grocery store for the past month or two so now that this is going on I hear a lot of things. There are the people who are very concerned about the virus (typically the elderly, who are at a higher risk), then the people who aren't worried (the kids of our generation). If I had to compare this to a Utopian or Dystopian society i would choose a dystopia. While I don't believe it is that bad yet, there is a possibility that it could take a turn for the worse depending on the longevity of this scare. My decision was based off the fact that basic goods are hard to come by now due to people hoarding them and if this continues it just means more and more goods are going to be hard to come by. If I were to tell the story of all this in the future I would use the first person and tell only my perspective since that is the only one I am certain of. There may be details here or there from other sources I would include, it would only be to add some effect to the story.
I don't truly have a favorite work about either a utopia or dystopia, as I have only read one book on the subject. It was Animal Farm by George Orwell, and while it was an okay read, it wasn't my type of work. And it was a school reading, there is not a lot of school readings that people find enjoyable. We also watched the movie in class, which I found to be more enjoyable because I prefer movies over books. It is easier for me to understand what is happening if I am able to see the characters and their actions to go along with their dialogue. The genre of this particular title would probably be satire but aimed towards politics. This is due to the animals not liking the way the farm is run and deciding to overthrow the farmer and run it the way they seem fit, as a utopia where every animal is seen as equal. Along the way, however, a problem arises which causes them to instead fall into a dictatorship led by a power hungry pig. Thus bringing in the elements of a dystopian society, the failed attempts at a perfect world halted by problem and thrown into a problematic, unjust society.
